The previous construction, which stood from 1890 to 1905, had to be totally demolished in order to make way for a larger structure. The new hotel is 19 stories tall, and the former 8-story structure could not be built upon.

• The boardroom is where it all happens. In 1985, the Plaza Accord was held in the hotel, which brought together delegates from a variety of nations (including the United States, Japan, France, and others) to discuss economic difficulties.
