Adetutu Adedokun, an unarmed combat instructor with the Department of State Services, has been identified as the woman who jumped into the Lagos Lagoon on Thursday. Her suicide attempt was caught on video.
Channels Television cited anonymous sources in her office as having informed them that Adedokun, who is in her late 30s and recently got engaged a few weeks ago, recently announced her engagement.
A letter of commendation from the Director General of the DSS praising Adedokun for her work as the most effective unarmed combat operative in her set is said to have been given to her a few months ago.
It was reported that Adedokun had exited an Uber taxi car on the bridge and then dove into the lagoon on Thursday afternoon. Before getting out of the taxi, the driver said, she was engaged in an animated discussion with her fiance, who was waiting for her outside.
Dr. Olufemi Oke-Osanyintolu, the Permanent Secretary of the Lagos State Emergency Management Agency, stated that “Upon the arrival of the Lagos Response Team at the incident scene, investigation revealed that a lady in her late 30s plunged into the Lagos lagoon.” This was said by Dr. Oke-Osanyintolu.
“Further inquiry found that the lady exited an Uber taxi car on the bridge and dove into the lagoon. This was discovered after further investigation.
“Before getting out of the car, the driver of the cab asserted, she was in the midst of an animated discussion with her fiance, who was also present.
“The LRT, members of the Lagos State Fire and Rescue Services, LASWA, and officials of the Department of State Services are currently on the ground working together to search for the casualty,” the LRT said in a statement.
Gbenga Omotosho, the state commissioner for information and strategy, claimed that despite the rescue crews’ best efforts, they were unable to locate the victim following a vigorous search and rescue operation.
It was already dark when they started their search at 7 o’clock, so the rescue crews decided to call it off. They are going to continue searching for the body tomorrow (which is Friday); you should realize that it is water, and a wave could have moved the body elsewhere. However, we will look in every possible place.”
