Visitors are greeted by a kaleidoscope of sights and sounds, from hopeful street musicians to the aroma of local cuisine filling the air.
Even the wealthiest people have a budget! Just because it’s more money doesn’t mean it’s any less of a budget, as I’ve said many times before. We all want to get the most out of our hard-earned money, so that’s the truth.
When it comes to traveling, this is especially true.
There’s a price to pay for exploring the streets of a major city, however. Visitors worry about how their vacation will affect their daily lives when the fun is over, making it difficult to enjoy the trip. Fortunately, there are a number of cities in the United States that are both affordable and fun. These city getaways promise to deliver unforgettable experiences without squandering a penny.
Now, some of the most affordable cities to visit in the United States aren’t always those that are well-known. While it is possible to visit New York or Los Angeles on a budget, this does not imply that these cities are among the most affordable in the United States.
I wanted to share some of my favorite and most affordable cities in the United States with you.
Even outside of the United States, some are well-known, while others are a little less well known. Whatever the case may be, I’d like to offer up some new places to visit while on a US vacation.
- Washington, D.C.
When it comes to free attractions, the capital of the United States does not disappoint. It’s also an extremely navigable location, thanks to a grid layout that will keep even the most directionally challenged individuals on the right track. There’s almost too much to do and see in Washington, D.C., but these activities are a great place to start:
Discover the top-notch free museums on the National Mall, including the National Museum of African Art, the United States Holocaust Memorial Museum, and the National Gallery of Art, to name a few.
Travel to the site of Martin Luther King Jr.’s famous “I Have a Dream” speech, the historic Lincoln Memorial, and the towering Washington National Monument.
Take advantage of the city’s culturally diverse cuisines, which range from Ethiopian fare at Beteseb Restaurant to Taiwanese-Cambodian fusion at Maketto, among other options.
We’ll start with Washington DC, which is a bit of an unusual choice because it’s not the first city that comes to mind when you think of the cheapest places to visit in the United States.
You’d be correct in assuming that the best hotels in Washington DC are a little more expensive than those in other cities. Having said that, you’ll save a lot of money in other ways as well.
Places like the National Mall, the Library of Congress (the world’s largest library), and the United States Capitol Building are all completely free to visit. However, you will need to make a reservation for a tour of the United States Capitol Building here before going.
Also, don’t forget that you can go inside the White House for free if you want to. To schedule a visit, all you have to do is get in touch with your local United States State Representative.
2. San Antonio, Texas
With its completely rich fusion of American history and Mexican culture, San Antonio is one of the most beautiful cities in the United States to visit and live in.
Even better, luxury Hotel rates are competitive, and there’s plenty to see and do while you’re here to keep you entertained.
Make sure to visit the Alamo (which is free), sample some delectable Mexican-fusion cuisine, and stroll down the Paseo del Rio, the city’s river walk, once you’ve arrived.
Supercool While Austin and Houston are well-known for their live music scenes, San Antonio is known for its delicious barbecue and world-renowned historical sites.
It’s a pretty entertaining city to visit, and it’s probably one of the most affordable places to visit in the United States; especially when compared to New York City.
When visiting San Antonio, visitors will not be disappointed by the following notable tourist attractions:
Learn about the fascinating history of The Alamo, a former Catholic mission and fortress famous for its battle with the Mexican army in 1836 that has been transformed into a museum.
Relax and enjoy a leisurely stroll down the scenic San Antonio Riverwalk, stopping at the many shops and restaurants that dot the waterway.
The Japanese Tea Garden, a beautiful arboretum on the National Register of Historic Places in the United States, is a tranquil haven of peace.
Essex Modern City, a large collection of colorful murals, is a great place to take in some open-air art.
3. Albuquerque, New Mexico
Due to its size as the largest city in New Mexico, Albuquerque has a number of excellent value hotels and lodging options. Alburquerque, New Mexico, is a city in the high desert that is a great getaway for those who enjoy sunny days, good food, and a rich cultural heritage. With these attractions, you can take in the best of New Mexico’s urban scene.
This all adds up to make it one of the most affordable cities in the United States to visit. Once here, don’t miss out on the Sandia Peak Tramway, which, rising to 10,378, provides a bird’s eye view of the mountain landscapes. It is an excellent vantage point for taking in the views of Albuquerque and the Sandia Mountains.
At Duran Central Pharmacy, you can get a deliciously affordable enchilada, and at the Dog House Drive In, you can get some good old American fare.
Visit the Maxwell Museum of Anthropology and the Indian Pueblo Cultural Center for an educational and culturally enriching experience.
Petroglyph National Monument, with thousands of Ancestral Pueblo carvings and volcanic rock formations, is a natural time machine that transports you back in time.
4. Indianapolis, Indiana
A wide range of activities and attractions are available in Indianapolis, with something for everyone’s interests. A network of bike trails connects Indianapolis’ culturally distinct districts, making it not only an interesting place to visit, but also a place where getting around is convenient, inexpensive, and enjoyable. Brewery enthusiasts will be pleased to know that the city is home to approximately 30 establishments, with the number of microbreweries continuing to grow.
Tourists will wish they had more time in Indianapolis after visiting these must-see attractions in the underappreciated Midwestern gem of a city.
Remember to spend some time relaxing in White River Park while you’re in town.
Due to the low cost of living in the city, saving money on accommodations is possible.
Visit the sprawling Newfields campus, which is home to the prestigious Indianapolis Museum of Art, The Beer Garden, and the Fairbanks Art and Nature Park, among many other attractions.
The Indianapolis Motor Speedway Museum takes you on a virtual tour through the history of racing.
You can indulge in some traditional pub fare at the Bluebeard gastropub, as well as a slice of cake at the Instagrammable Cake Bake Shop.
5. Fort Lauderdale, Florida
The best part about Fort Lauderdale is that it is significantly less expensive than its neighboring city, Miami. Having said that, there are plenty of amazing things to do for a lower cost in this region.
When you get here, make sure to check out Las Olas Boulevard, see Bonnet House, and eat your fill at Louie Bossi Restaurant. Do not forget to visit Hollywood, Florida, which is only a short drive away.
Amazing street art and murals can be found throughout the city, and they are hard to overlook.
6. Houston, Texas
When it comes to luxury hotels in Houston, you’ll be surprised at how affordable they are compared to other major cities around the world.
Once you arrive, you’ll find that many of the city’s attractions are free to explore. the Menil Collection of Art, the Holocaust Museum Houston, and the Rothko Chapel should be on your itinerary.
It’s a one-hour drive from Houston to Galveston Island’s beach, but the cost of renting a car is reasonable. Book a “compact/economy” viechle, and you’ll be all set.
Rent will be cheaper, and fuel will be used more efficiently, if this approach is followed.
7. San Antonio, Texas

An affordable variety of attractions in a city known for its university is essential for keeping students happy, and in the beautiful city of Raleigh, North Carolina, there’s something fun to do on every corner. It is recommended that visitors include the following activities on their must-do lists to ensure that they have a memorable experience:
Spend some time hiking or biking the scenic trails at William B. Umstead State Park, which is a part of the East Coast Greenway, which connects Maine and Florida.
Visit the James B. Hunt Library, a futuristic architectural masterpiece with a fascinating interior design and cutting-edge technology, which is open to the public.
The Green Light, tucked away behind a secret bookcase in The Architect Bar and Social House, offers a glimpse into Raleigh’s vibrant nightlife scene.

10. New Orleans, Louisiana

That being said, you can spend as little as a few dollars to attend a performance at Preservation Hall, which is a must-do experience.
The city of New Orleans has a strong pulse. The streets of New Orleans’ historic French Quarter are constantly alive with live music and free entertainment that is sure to get travelers’ feet tapping in time for the weekend. This is a city that, while it may not be the same size as Nashville or Memphis, is still quite incredible to spend a few days exploring. Even better, it’s one of the most affordable cities in the United States to visit, thanks to the low cost of accommodation and activities..

12. Louisville, Kentucky
