Apple’s release of iOS 14.5 was notable for a variety of reasons, but one that has gone somewhat unnoticed is the Maps app. You can now report incidents in real time to other Apple Maps users. Not only can this save you time, energy and money, it can also save your life. For now, the feature is only available in the US and China, but is expected to be available worldwide in the future.
In this article, Niketrainers.com.co will tell you:
Report using Apple Maps
Please note that any incident reports should only be made by someone who is not in the driver’s seat or stopped. That said, while you’re in the car and the passenger is using Apple Maps (or CarPlay), you can quickly report an incident while using turn-by-turn navigation. Be aware that Mainland Chinese users will see a different set of incidents to report, and this is likely to be the case for future international publications as well.
Every accident is quite obvious, but as a reminder:
- Danger: This type of incident is best used when something is on the road or that may endanger you or another driver. It could be a piece of rubber from another tire, something that has fallen off another car, etc.
- Accident – This type of incident is best suited for situations ranging from a small pothole to a fender to a major accident that blocks or obstructs traffic.
- Speed Control: While controversial, there are still many Apple users who will appreciate using this feature to avoid falling into the speed trap.
Report an incident using turn-by-turn navigation
1. Swipe up from the bottom of the turn-by-turn navigation screen and tap the Report button.
2. Now you can choose from different types of incidents such as speed control, danger, accident, road works etc. Try to put the pin as close as possible to the incident to help other drivers better.
Report an incident while using Apple Maps
Even if you are not navigating, you can report an incident quickly, which is good for anyone walking or cycling using maps.
1. Touch the information button (“i”) in the upper right corner of the Map screen.
2. Click “Report a Problem” and the next screen will display a set of options similar to what you can see while navigating in Apple Maps.
3. Select Crash, Danger, or Speed Control and, as before, carefully position the pushpin as close to the incident as possible. You can also add additional details, including photos or descriptions, to help other drivers avoid the marked areas.
Report the incident from Siri
Since everyone who drives on the road should try to keep their hands free with their devices, Apple made sure Siri could help with reporting any incidents. Using Siri is fairly straightforward, and anyone who already uses Apple’s voice assistant should be familiar right away.
Start by saying “Hello Siri”, then continue by typing one of the following phrases:
- Hey Siri, there’s a cruise control
- Hey Siri, something’s in the way
- Hey Siri, there’s an accident on the way.
- Hey Siri, there’s an accident ahead of us
- Hey Siri, danger is looming
As long as any variant of the above is close enough, it should work and Siri will immediately report the incident on the map.
Report an incident using CarPlay
Using CarPlay, reporting an incident is as easy as using an iPhone.
When you are on the turn-by-turn navigation screen, you will see an “i” button for the event. Tap this button and select Accident, Danger or Cruise Control. After entering a report, an icon will appear on the map to indicate any threats or accidents. The speed check report will send you a notification when you use the manual.
Final thoughts
Apple Maps has improved in many ways since they were first released to the world. Where Google Maps was once the undisputed leader, the navigation landscape is now quite different. Both Apple Maps and Google offer a similar but different experience, while Waze continues to focus on engaging users from both platforms. What is your preferred map app?
