Nobody likes having a random blue screen of death. They are scary and usually don’t contain too many details. Usually, an error code or message appears on the screen. If you see a “controller power status error” don’t worry. This is one of the errors that you can usually fix and correct by yourself. All you need to do is know where to start.
In this article, Niketrainers.com.co will tell you:
Common causes of driver power state errors
Based on the name, you might think this error has something to do with your drivers or power supply. Both may be right. While it would be nice if Windows gave you more to continue, you need to find the exact cause which could be one of the following:
- Incorrect power settings
- Driver problems
- Incompatible hardware
Windows displays this error when the system tries to reactivate the specified device driver and is unresponsive. This usually happens when the computer starts up, restarts, or wakes the computer from sleep mode. It can also happen when the device is in use and the driver suddenly becomes unresponsive.
As you can see, this is generally a driver problem, although it can be mixed up with two other common causes. No matter which of these three cases is the main culprit, there are several ways to diagnose and fix this problem.
Refine your search
To help identify the root cause of the controller power status error, it is a good idea to disconnect any external hardware such as external drives, keyboards, etc. Start your computer and check if the error still occurs. Otherwise, the driver of one of the external devices has been damaged.
Plug in each device one at a time to see which one is causing the error. Then, when you find the problematic device, unplug it and restart it.
Reconnect the device after booting the system. Right-click Start and select Device Manager. Right-click the device name and select Uninstall.
Restart your computer and let Windows install the device properly. If the error persists, please visit the manufacturer’s website to download the latest driver and follow the included instructions to install it.
Look for errors in Device Manager
If you can restart your computer normally, do so. If not, start your computer in Safe Mode. This will bypass the BSoD driver power status error.
Right-click Start and select Device Manager. Look for any device that may have a yellow exclamation mark next to it. This is an error. Right-click on the error device and select “Update Driver”. If nothing is found, right-click the device and select Uninstall.
You can right-click the computer name and select “Scan for hardware changes” or restart the system. They both will try to reinstall the correct driver automatically.
If you’re still having problems, reinstall the drivers, starting with the newer hardware. If you’ve recently installed something new and started getting an error, it’s likely the culprit.
Customize your energy saving plan
If you’re using a laptop, your power settings may have been optimized to reduce power consumption. This is great most of the time, but can wreak havoc on some of your device’s drivers. Instead of letting Windows activate the device as it should, the system cuts the power, which causes the controller power state to fail.
While your computer may use a little more battery, you should avoid this error by making quick changes to your power plan.
If you are unable to boot into normally, boot into Safe Mode to do so. Otherwise, start normally.
Go to Start and type Control Panel. Select Control Panel from the results. Look for a power option. If you don’t see it, enter “power options” in the search box in the upper right corner.
Select Power Options to open the current power plan and settings.
Select “Change plan settings” and click the “Change advanced settings” link.
A controller power status error error is often the result of incorrect power settings for the wireless adapter and PCI Express controllers.
Start by extending the wireless adapter and power saving mode. Make sure both options are set to “Maximum Performance”. This prevents the power saving plans from disabling the wireless adapter to save power.
Follow the same process for PCI Express. Click Apply when done. Then click “Save Changes” when you are back to the original power settings screen.
Restart your computer to see if this fixes the error. Otherwise, you can change the other options to Maximum Performance one at a time to see if that changes anything.
While it can be bothersome when troubleshooting a driver power status error in Windows 10, this is a fixable error. Be patient and you will find the reason and use your computer without BSoD again.
However, if you see the “The parameter is invalid” error, you can fix it.
