Marsupialization is one of the surgical methods of treating cysts. In gynecology, this procedure involves the treatment of an abscess in the Bartholin gland cyst (a mucus-secreting gland located at the entrance to the vagina, at the level of the lower 1/3 of the labia), resulting from the closure of the duct that leads the mucus out of the gland.
In this article, Niketrainers.com.co will tell you:
What are the symptoms of Bartholin’s inflammation
A common disease is inflammation of the Bartholin gland, which is caused by the accumulation of pus in the gland. The characteristic symptoms of Bartholin’s gland inflammation include pain in the intimate areas, apathy, general weakness and increased body temperature .
- soreness in the intimate areas
- bad mood
- weakness
- higher temperature
The procedure consists in cutting the cyst wall, emptying its contents and sewing the cut edges of the cyst wall into the mucosa in order to prevent its re-filling and closure. Marsupialization cannot be 100% sure that the treated abscess will never come back. If this is the case, a complete Bartholin gland excision is indicated.
The procedure is performed under short, intravenous general anesthesia and takes about 10-15 minutes.
The course of marsupialization
The cyst is opened and cleansed. The edges are sewn to the surrounding skin, as a result the opening of the gland duct becomes larger, preventing the cyst from reoccurring. After the procedure, the woman may return home on the same day.
Preoperative recommendations
The operation is preceded by a consultation visit. Before the procedure, the following tests should be performed (tests can be performed at our Clinic)

Do not have sex for up to 7 days after the procedure. The seams used in the treatment are absorbable.
Scrupulous adherence to postoperative recommendations is crucial in quick recovery and significantly affects the final result of the surgery.
When should I see a doctor?
If the following symptoms appear, it is necessary to see a doctor:
- chillsor a fever above 38.5 ° C;
- vaginal discharge with an unpleasant odor;
- stronger pain or swelling in the intimate areas;
- vaginal bleeding, which requires you to change one or more pads within an hour.
Following all medical recommendations in the postoperative period reduces the risk of postoperative complications and speeds up the recovery period.
