Connection and data transfer are two of the invaluable uses of a computer. Many technologies have emerged from this pressing need. An effective method of connecting computers is to use Ethernet cables. Questions that arise with this method are: what cable to use (straight or crossover) and how to do it?
In this article, Niketrainers.com.co will tell you:
Choice of straight or crossover cables
To know which cables will get the job done, you first need to identify which devices you want to connect; Are they devices of the same type (for example, two computers), or are they devices of a different type (for example, a computer to a network switch or Ethernet hub)?
When two similar systems share files, one generates data and the other receives it as input. Crossover cabling in a crossover cable intentionally connects the transmit signals at one end to the receive signals at the other end. This makes patch cords the most ideal cables for Ethernet connections between similar systems such as two computers.
How to connect two Windows computers with a LAN cable
With the patch cord in hand, the steps are quite simple.
1. Go to “Control Panel -> Network and Internet -> Network and Sharing Center -> Change adapter settings”.
2. Click “Change Adapter Settings”. This will reveal different connections. Choose the correct connection for your LAN. Typically, but not necessarily, the connection will be called Ethernet and will describe the disconnected network cable.
Right-click on the connection and select “Properties”. The Local Area Connection Properties window will appear.
3. In the Network tab, select “Internet Protocol Version 4 (TCP / IPv4)” and then click “Properties”.
In the Properties windows, set the IP address and subnet mask of the first computer to:
- IP – 192.168.0.1
- Subnet Mask – 225.225.225.0
Repeat all the above steps for the other computer and configure the IP address and subnet mask as follows:
- IP – 192.168.0.2
- Subnet Mask – 225.225.225.0
Note– It is important to make sure that the last IP address values for the two computers are different.
4. The next step is to connect the cross cable to the network ports of both computers. Both ends of the network cable look the same so it doesn’t matter which end you use first. The network ports look like the picture below. (Note that most of thecomputerslaptops do not have a LAN port).
5. Right-click on “This PC” and select “Properties”. Click “Change settings -> Change”. This will bring up a window with the name of the workgroup. The workgroup name value must be the same for both computers. By default, the workgroup name is WORKGROUP, but you can change it to anything you want.
6. Right-click the drive you want to share. Scroll down to “Give Access To” and click “Advanced Sharing.” In the sharing tab, click the “Advanced Sharing” button.
This reveals an advanced sharing window. Check the “Share this folder” checkbox and click “Apply -> OK”.
In this step, you will successfully connect two Windows computers to share drives.
File transfer
Now you can move specific files or folders. To share specific folders or files on computer A (ADMIN-HP) with computer B, simply right-click the desired folder or file on computer A, scroll to “Grant access” and click “Specific people”.
Select “All” from the drop-down menu in the file sharing window. Then click “Add” and “Share”.
Go to Network Panel on computer B and you will see the name of any computer that is part of the network. In this case, computer A is ADMIN-HP. Double-click on it and all shared files will be displayed. At this stage, you can use regular copy and paste to move the content you want.
When copying files from computer B to computer A, follow the same steps, this time on computer B and vice versa.
