Ground Beef e coli recall; Because of the possibility that it may be contaminated with E. coli, a manufacturer in New Jersey is voluntarily recalling more than 120,000 pounds of ground beef products.
During routine testing, it was discovered by regulators that some products manufactured by Lakeside Refrigerated Services, which is based in Swedesboro, New Jersey, may be contaminated with E. coli O103, a strain of the bacteria that is more difficult to identify.
According to a statement made by the Food Safety and Inspection Service of the United States Department of Agriculture in a news release, there have been no confirmed reports of illnesses or adverse reactions related to the consumption of the food.
People who may have bought the products, which were sold in stores across the country, are being urged by the agency not to consume them and instead to either throw them away or return them to the store from which they were purchased. The products were distributed nationwide.
On the website of the Food Safety and Inspection Service (FSIS), you can find the product codes and labels of the affected products.
The products that are being recalled have the establishment number “EST. 46841” on them, and they were manufactured between February 1 and April 8.
The Food Safety and Inspection Service (FSIS) reports that it takes an average of three to four days for a person to become ill from consuming E. coli O103, with symptoms including diarrhea and vomiting.
Some people have the potential to develop a more severe infection, which may include a rare form of kidney failure that is characterized by easy bruising, paleness, and decreased urine output. Those who exhibit such symptoms, according to the regulators, should seek immediate treatment at an emergency medical facility.
According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), the Escherichia coli (E. coli) bacteria can cause a variety of symptoms, including diarrhea, severe stomach cramps, and vomiting. The bacteria can also be spread through the consumption of food or water that has been contaminated by human or animal waste, as well as through direct contact with humans or animals.
According to a notice that was distributed by the FSIS on Monday, the recall involved approximately 120,872 pounds of raw ground beef product that was manufactured by Lakeside Refrigerated Services, which is a business located in Swedesboro, New Jersey. There were several brands that sold the beef, including Thomas Farms, Nature’s Reserve, and Marketside Butcher, among others.
According to the notice issued by the FSIS, routine testing revealed the presence of the O103 strain of the “Shiga toxin-producing E. coli” (STEC) bacteria. However, there have been no reports of illness as a result of the consumption of the products as of yet.
It was stated that it could take anywhere from two to eight days for people to become ill after consuming products that were contaminated with STEC. The vast majority of people will be better within a week, but some may go on to develop a more serious infection. Hemolytic uremic syndrome (HUS), a form of kidney failure, is unusual in patients who have an infection caused by STEC O103, according to the FSIS.
According to the CDC, many strains of E. coli are harmless and can be found living in the intestines of healthy humans and animals. However, the strains of E. coli that produce Shiga toxin are the ones that are responsible for disease.
According to their calculations, there are approximately 265,000 cases of STEC infections that occur annually in the United States.
