The first case of monkey pox was recorded in 1958 in a colony of African monkeys. They were kept in small cages for research purposes. They had a smallpox-like rash on their skin. Since the 1970s, the first cases of monkey pox infections among humans have been reported – mainly in Africa.

The infection most often occurs through droplets, through contact with body fluids of the infected or by eating their meat. The first symptoms are easily confused with the common flu. Virus incubation takes approximately 12 days. A clear symptom of the disease is a rash that turns into painful ulcers and cracks on the body after two weeks.
