ASUU Strike: ASUU Statement Regarding Plan to Boycott Lectures

The Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) has decided to abandon its intentions to stage a lecture boycott and instead will stage a one-day protest across the country in response to the fact that the Federal Government is only paying them half of their salaries.

You may remember that the FG stated that it had implemented a policy of “no work, no pay” for lecturers across the country.

According to ASUU, the demonstration will be planned at the branch levels of the union across public university campuses countrywide. Additionally, it will take place as a lecture-free day for all lecturers who are members of the union. This information was obtained from ASUU.

Sunday, members of the press were informed by one of the union’s members who spoke on the condition of anonymity that they confirmed the one-day strike.

According to him, the protest and the boycott of the speech will not be something that is consistent.

“We are protesting. Branches will choose their own dates, the government needs to understand that we are not casual workers.”

In a letter that was signed by the chairperson of the ASUU branch at the University of Lagos, Dr. Dele Ashir, it was indicated that the branch would protest on Tuesday, November 15, 2022. This letter confirmed the recent development.
The letter, which was addressed to “all stakeholders,” mentioned in its body that the special congress and protest rally against the casualization of intellectualism in Nigeria will take place on “Tuesday, November 15, 2022, at Julius Berger auditorium.”

As of the time that this article was being filed, attempts to contact the national president of ASUU, Professor Emmanuel Osodeke, for the purpose of obtaining remarks were unsuccessful.

It is important to keep in mind that many public university professors were unhappy with the fact that they were only paid half for the month of October.

Chris Ngige, the Minister of Labor and Employment, brought up the fact that university lecturers get paid on a pro-rata basis while he was defending the choice that the government made.
